(SPORTS) SHANI DAVIS SKIPS OLYMPIC OPENING 2_12_2018

U.S. Olympic speedskater Shani Davis who has made Olympic history in the past was a no-show at this year’s 2018 Olympic opening ceremony.

According to the New York Daily News, Davis lost out on being the United States’ flag bearer at the Pyeongchang Winter Games to veteran luger Erin Hamlin in a coin toss “after the final vote among the eight U.S. winter sports federations ended deadlocked at 4-4.”

Davis, took to Twitter to express his disdain for the coin toss.

“I am an American and when I won the 1000m in 2010 I became the first American to 2-peat in that event. @TeamUSA dishonorably tossed a coin to decide its 2018 flag bearer. No problem. I can wait until 2022. #BlackHistoryMonth2018″.

With the tweet Davis, seems to insinuate that the Olympic Committee did not properly honor his achievements as a black Olympian. Davis decided to skip the opening ceremony in its entirety.

Davis, 35, was the first African American to win an individual gold medal in the 2016 games. He also won two Olympic silver medals.
