Start of classes still indefinite in some areas in Texas

Due to Hurricane Harvey’s devastating effect, thousands of students in Texas are still uncertain when are they coming back to school.

“We couldn’t really be in the water like that because it was contaminated, people we’re just screaming asking for help saying get out the water,” said 18-year-old Shannon Barre. Barre is among the 2,000 evacuees staying at the Dallas Convention Center.

Meanwhile, parents shared activities and aid are spread in the convention to keep the children’s learning in progress.

“They read books to them coloring books, baby books, work books,” said evacuee Lloynisha Daniels.

On the other hand, the teens shared how eager they are to go back to school as soon as possible as they value the importance of education for their future.

“I just want to be somebody in life, have a good job a good place to stay at,” added Barre.

Port Arthur Independent Schools are closed until further notice. It may take two to three weeks before they’re back open, so some of the kids will go to school in Dallas.

Meanwhile, 218,000 students in Houston are expected to begin classes on September 11.
