Virgil Abloh has been named the artistic director of the billion-dollar French fashion house Louis Vuitton.
Abloh, a fashion visionary on his own right will debut his collection for the tycoon fashion label in June in Paris. The wWashington Post stated that “Abloh is a designer who has been able to distill pop culture, the zeitgeist, the aura of cool, the glamour of celebrity and a kind of glossy hipster diversity down into motorcycle jackets, T-shirts and sneakers. And that fizzy potion has crowds going wild, which surely is what attracted Louis Vuitton executives in the first place.”
Abloh is somewhat of a Renaissance man partnering and collaborating with many designers and fragrance companies including Ikea and Byredo. Abloh is also the brains behind Off-White c/o Virgil Abloh a high-end urban wear line.
“It is an honor for me to accept the position of men’s artistic director for Louis Vuitton,” Abloh said in a statement. “I find the heritage and creative integrity of the house are key inspirations and will look to reference them both while drawing parallels to modern times.”
Abloh joins the ranks of Dapper Dan and other people of color building with major design brands in partenerships.
