Shekira Dennis

Civic Engagement Advocate & Community Organizer

Shekira currently serves as the community outreach consultant to Texas Southern University’s Barbara-Jordan Mickey-Leland School of Public Affairs. She is also an IGNITE Texas facilitator, in which she teaches young women the importance of civic engagement and political empowerment at KIPP Sunnyside and KIPP Houston. In addition, she recently served as the Deputy Political Director for the Sylvester Turner for Mayor Campaign. Her passion is empowering her community through civic participation.

Shekira received her first internship opportunity with Houston’s City Hall in the office of former City Council Member Wanda Adams. Shortly thereafter, her talents earned her a summer organizing fellowship with President Obama’s campaign in the key battleground state of North Carolina, where she worked alongside the Charlotte team. She went on to join the Texans Together Education Fund, a non-partisan group that empowers low propensity voters in economically disadvantaged areas to vote. Shekira also completed the White House Internship Program, where she worked within the Office of Presidential Personnel.

Shekira is a graduate of the Houston Black Leadership Institute (HBLI), and the prestigious Women’s Campaign School at Yale.

Shekira earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science with a minor in journalism from the Barbara Jordan-Mickey Leland School of Public Affairs at Texas Southern University. While at Texas Southern, she served as the 64th president of the university’s Student Government Association.
