The school board in Richmond, Virginia, on Monday night decided to do their little part in changing the dynamic of oppression in this country, by voting to rename an elementary school after former President Obama the first Black president.

J.E.B. Stuart Elementary School, named after a Confederate general, will become Barack Obama Elementary School. This is a big step in the right direction as Richmond was the former capital of the Confederate States of America.

“This is Richmond and we are about history and we have so many great local stories to tell,” said Kenya Gibson, who represents the elementary school, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch. “Our local stories are so important to cherish.”

Within recent years protestors and activists have spoken out and even removed statues and other monuments that honor confederate leaders.
