New Hope Missionary Baptist Church to Hold 5th Annual Hope for Houston Showers & Blessings for Homeless Community
On Saturday, November 30th Pastor Darrel W. Boson of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church will have their 5th Annual Hope for Houston Showers & Blessings event. Operated solely from donations and volunteers, Hope for Houston has provided hot meals for the homeless community the past four years. However, going into their fifth year, along with the hot meal being served, they will have hot showers and haircuts.
The shower concept came to Pastor Boson right before Hurricane Rita hit in 2005. “I saw Proctor & Gamble had this trailer with Tide on it. The trailer was loaded with washers and dryers for people who had been displaced to be able to wash their clothes,” stated Darrel W. Boson – Senior Pastor of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church. “I thought, I can take that same concept and make the trailer into showers!”
Although the idea came in 2005, Pastor Boston stated it wasn’t until 2018 while partnering with Remnant Church on another project that the shower concept came up again as they were seeking to partner with a company from San Antonio to help Houston’s Homeless take showers during the Thanksgiving Holiday.
“After talking to Remnant Church who were looking to bring showers here to Houston, we decided to collaborate with them and what we were doing to provide hot meals, hot showers and haircuts,” stated Pastor Boson. “Hence the name Hope for Houston Showers & Blessings.”
There will be 30 showers on a 33ft trailer with 15 showers on each side designating one side for women and children and the other side for men. The James Simmons Group will supply 5,000 gallons of water for the showers to operate by attaching their water meter to the City of Houston’s water supply.
The day’s event will kick off at 10 am. Upon arrival, showers will be set up and ready for individuals to take a hot shower. They will be provided with clean towels, toiletries and new clothing to choose from once they’re done. After showering, the men will be able to get a haircut while waiting to receive their hot meal.
“All food will be cooked hot on the spot. We are serving fried fish, fried chicken, french fries, Potato salad, green beans, dessert, soda and water,” stated Boson. “Only one plate per person. If there are leftovers, they are welcome to get back in line with another ticket to get more. The goal is not to take anything back with us.”
Pastor Boson and his volunteers feed over 327 homeless people in 2018 with 32 cases of fish and 50lbs of chicken all from donations. This year they plan on feeding over 600 plus people.
