DEMETRIA LUCAS D’OYLEY is an award-winning writer. As a journalist, her work has been published in The New York Times, The Washington Post,, The Guardian, Essence, XO Jane and The Huffington Post and The Root. Her first book, A Belle in Brooklyn: The Go-to Guide for Advice on Living Your Best Single Life was published in 2011. Her follow up advice  book, “Don’t Waste Your Pretty: The Go-to Guide for Making Smarter Decisions in Life & Love” debuted in 2014.

As a speaker, Demetria’s appeared at many universities, including Harvard, Princeton, Columbia, Georgetown, and New York University. She’s also a frequent panelist or moderator at festivals and conferences, including Essence Festival, SXSW, and BlogHer. And as a sought after dating and relationship expert or pop culture commentator, she’s appeared on Good Morning America, The Today Show, and Nightline, CNN, HLN, and Access Hollywood. 

Demetria launched her first blog,, in 2007 as “the hilarious misadventures of a single Southern woman living too far above the Mason Dixon.” Her popular site garnered the attention of editors at Essence magazine where she was the Relationships Editor for four years.

Since 2011, Demetria has turned her passion for very -logical and gently-filtered relationship and pop culture commentary into a sizable social media platform with 200k built-in readers, mostly women. She’s appeared in commercials for Pantene and Oraquick and partnered with brands such as Lincoln, Macy’s, Pepsi, Disney, and Universal Pictures.

In her (rare) downtime, Demetria shoots You Tube videos (mostly  recaps of her favorite TV shows), answers dating/relationship questions (60k+), binges on Netflix, creates epic captions on Instagram, practices her photography skills on Gilded Age architecture, and “occasionally” travels.

She currently lives between Brooklyn and Washington, D.C., and is working on her third book, Life Is Not A Dress Rehearsal.
