A young girl died after being tossed into the Hillsborough River this afternoon by a woman believed to be her mother, Tampa police said.
According to Chief Brian Dugan, it was around 4 p.m. when witnesses called police to report seeing a child being thrown into the water not far from the Columbus Avenue bridge north of downtown. Emergency crews responded; 30 minutes later, they found the body of a 4-year-old girl.
It’s terrible to see. I don’t want to see that happen to a 4-year-old,” neighbor Romano Muniz told reporters.
Police have a woman in custody. They have not identified her, but they believe she is the girl’s mother. They are questioning her now, trying to figure out what happened, and also looking over a gold Nissan sedan left at the scene.
“Unfortunately at this time, there are much more questions than there are answers,” Chief Dugan offered. “It’s the craziness of the world we live in at this time.”
