Hollywood has been known for not paying women fairly specifically women of color in comparison to their male counterparts, just ask Mo’Nique.
However, Oscar winner Octavia Spencer and Nominee Jessica Chastain formed a sisterhood to fight against pay equity.
Chastain, who starred in The Help with Spencer negotiated a raise for both of the acclaimed actors for an upcoming holiday comedy after finding out that Spencer was not being equally paid. The negotiation led to a much bigger offer than previously sought.
Spencer had voiced to Chastain that black women were getting short changed in Hollywood compared to white actresses. Chastain, who has been an advocate for pay equity decided to take action.
“I love that woman,” Spencer said during the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s Women Breaking Barriers panel at the Sundance Film Festival.
“She’s walking the walk and she’s actually talking the talk,” Spencer said. “She said, ‘Octavia we’re gonna get you paid on this film. …. You and I are gonna be tied together. We’re gonna be favored nations, and we’re gonna make the same thing.’ … Fast forward to last week, we’re making five times what we asked for.”
Emphatically Spencer said, “Now, I want to go to what the men are making!”
