Take a break from all the horrors that has been happening around the world and allow yourself to splurge on a sweet treat—doughnuts!
Celebrated for nearly 80 years now, the National Donut Day was started in 1938 by the Salvation Army as a fundraiser in Chicago. It was considered a way to commemorate the work of the “doughnut girls” or “donut lassies” who fed the American soldiers during World War I, who also returned to duties during World War II.

And although female Salvation Army volunteers also provided writing supplies, stamps, clothes-mending, and home-cooked meals to soldiers on the front lines, those doughnuts left a mark with the troops. That is why a tradition had been born that every first Friday of June, National Doughnut Day should be celebrated in honor of our troops.
