Barbados elected its first woman prime minister and made history on Thursday by doing so.
Mia Amor Mottley, was elected by beating Prime Minister Freundel Stuart after her party won all 30 seats in the country’s House of Assembly. Mottley, was the seat head of Barbados’s Labour Party.
Mottley’s campaign messaging was greatly received as she addressed the country’s high taxes and rising cost of living.
Pop superstar Rihanna, who was born and raised in Barbados posted on Instagram celebrating the news.
“Say hello to my new prime minister and most importantly the FIRST FEMALE prime minister of Barbados,” she wrote.
