Despite facing controversies throughout the competition, Mack Beggs emerged as University Interscholastic League (UIL) Class 6A girls’ 110-pound state champion on Saturday at the Berry Center, Texas.

Identified as a boy, Beggs crushed  Chelsea Sanchez of Katy Morton Ranch High School in the finals round.

Earlier in the day, Beggs (56-0) pinned Grand Prairie’s Kailyn Clay in the second period of the semifinal match. It was his first pin of the weekend with his first-round win over Clear Springs’ Taylor Latham and quarterfinal win over Tascosa’s Mya Engert each coming by major decision.

Setting an undefeated record in the two-day tournament, the 17 year-old Euless Trinity wrestler originally joined the boys division but UIL rules prohibit him to continue as athletes must compete under the gender indicated on their birth certificate.
