R&B legend Mary J. Blige made history by becoming the first person ever to be nominated in an acting category and original song in the same year. Although, she didn’t win an Oscar she did steel the night with her powerful performance.
The singer, performed her nominated song “Mighty River” from “Mudbound” in which she was also nominated for best supporting actor accompanied with a choir behind her. It was a powerful stripped-down performance that made viewers realize why she was nominated.
The composition written by her, Raphael Saadiq and Taura Stinson is a classic heartfelt song.
“Ego’s a killer / Greed is a monster.” She pushed her voice to its breaking point in a line about getting “this hurt off me.” And she ditched words altogether at one point to embody the type of salvation that can feel like a river’s cleansing waters.
