While Donald Glover was hosting “Saturday Night Live” Childish Gambino his rap alter-ego was about to break the internet with his new video In between commercial breaks.
During “SNL,” Glover performed and released a single, “This Is America,” from his upcoming Childish Gambino album, which he says will be his last as his hip-hop alter ego.
In the symbolic video a shirtless Gambino dances in an empty building as chaos erupts around him, with some of that chaos coming from Gambino himself, as he casually shoots a hooded man in the back of the head and mows down a group of choir singers with a machine gun. Later in the video, Sza can be seen sitting nearby, as Gambino dances on top of an ’80s sedan.
The video has been praised by many fans and artists alike. With Winston Duke tweeting “What happens when you put creative agency in the hands of artists. Powerful narratives, carried by the vehicle of entertainment. Specificity is the universal connective tissue. Big shout out to @childishgambino for this one #ThisIsAmerica”
Award-winning director Ava Duvernay retweeted Duke’s sentiments and simply stated “What Winston said”
